Lucio Fontana

There was indeed a future

An Italian art historian stated that there were three essential artists of the twentieth century in his country, founding fathers of sorts: Amedeo Modigliani, Giorgio de Chirico and Lucio Fontana.

The Lucio Fontana exhibition. There was indeed a future - Un Futuro c’è stato was born from a conversation in 2020 with Pierre Soulages: we compared the works of these very different artists and yet linked by a poignant, close relationship between time and space. Pierre Soulages met Lucio Fontana whose singularity he admired. Alongside Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana is an artist, undoubtedly more sculptor than painter, whom Soulages saw one day exhibited in his museum. An idealist. There has not been a major exhibition on Fontana in France since the retrospectives at the Musée national d'art moderne Center Pompidou in 1987 and at the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2014.

The one in Rodez conforms to our mission of presenting great names in modern art: it will offer a journey through all of Fontana's work, before and after the War, in Argentina and Italy, an evocation of his creative variety: paintings, papers , sculptures, ceramics and light and spatial installations. The public will discover beyond the Concetti Spaziali (the spatial concepts), with the Attese (the slots) and the Buchi (the holes), a figurative and informal artist, a classic and futuristic man...

The exhibition will be an opportunity to present in the temporary exhibition room two Ambienti spaziali: the one with neon lights with curved lines, the arabesques of the 9th Triennale of Milan in 1951 - reconstructed especially for the exhibition - and that of the Galleria del Deposito in Geneva, 1967 (museum of contemporary art in Lyon). In 1951, in Milan, Fontana worked in collaboration with his friend the architect Luciano Baldessari and his collaborator Marcello Grisotti: neon was born, a medium from industry, a source of light acting emotionally on the viewer in a space other....
